Popeye the Sailor Man was created by Elzie Crisler (E.C.) Segar, born December 8, 1894 in Chester, Illinois. Growing up, he assisted his handyman father in house painting and paper hanging jobs. At the age of 18, he decided to embark on a career path as a cartoonist.
